Rahmi Mowjood, DO, Cucamonga Valley Medical Group

When it comes to men’s health, prevention is the name of the game. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) offers a treasure trove of guidelines to help men stay on top of their health. Here at Cucamonga Valley Medical Group (CVMG) we want to work with you to make sure that we address your preventative health head on!Let’s dive into some key recommendations and explore how you can incorporate them into your life with a touch of fun and flair.

1. The Heart of the Matter: Cardiovascular Health

The USPSTF recommends regular blood pressure screenings for men starting at age 18. Think of it as a game of “beat the numbers.” Keep your blood pressure in check by engaging in activities you love, whether it’s cycling, hiking, or even a dance-off in your living room. Remember, every step counts!

2. Colon Cancer: The Screening Adventure

For men aged 45 to 75, the USPSTF advises regular screenings for colorectal cancer. Consider this your health adventure quest. Whether you choose a colonoscopy or a less invasive stool test, you’re taking a proactive step in your health journey. Celebrate your screening with a healthy meal or a movie night.

3. Prostate Health: The PSA Puzzle

Prostate cancer screening is a personal decision for men aged 55 to 69. Discussing the pros and cons with your healthcare provider can feel like solving a puzzle. Once you’ve made your decision, reward yourself with a round of golf or a relaxing day at the beach.  At CVMG we recommend lab test for a Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA) every year.

4. Diabetes: Sweet Success

Screening for type 2 diabetes is recommended for men aged 35 to 70 who are overweight or obese. This can be done in one of our offices by doing a fingerstick HbA1c test.  Turn this into a challenge by setting fitness goals or trying new healthy recipes. Each small victory, like choosing a salad over fries, is a step toward sweet success.

5. Mental Health: The Mindful Mission

Depression screening is crucial for men of all ages. Embrace this mission by incorporating mindfulness practices into your routine. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or simply taking a walk in nature, nurturing your mental health can be both rewarding and enjoyable.

6. Tobacco Use: The Great Escape

The USPSTF advises interventions for tobacco cessation. If you’re a smoker, think of quitting as your great escape to a healthier life. Explore new hobbies or activities that keep your hands and mind busy, like painting, playing an instrument, or gardening.  We understand that smoking cessation can be very challenging and requires a dedicated behaviousal change, so start a conversation with your CVMG provider today.

7. Immunizations: The Shield of Protection

While not directly under USPSTF, staying up-to-date with vaccinations is vital. Consider them your shield of protection against preventable diseases. Make it fun by scheduling your flu shot with a friend and treating yourselves to a coffee date afterward.  Your health care provider at CVMG can recommend any adult immunizations to your local pharmacy.

Your Health, Your Adventure

Embracing the USPSTF guidelines doesn’t have to be a chore. By turning health screenings and preventive measures into fun and engaging activities, you can take charge of your well-being with enthusiasm. Remember, your health journey is uniquely yours, but your provider at CVMG can accompany you on this adventure, so make it worth embarking on!
